Read More WebWe met at The Finlen in Butte, and he gave us one of the most animated recollections of what happened on Aug. 4, 1961, when the Higgins Ridge Fire blew up on 20 smokejumpers in remote Idaho. I think his jump log entry from that day summarizes it quite well: "Fire exploded – ran to center of fire – almost bit the dust & rescued by helicopter."
