CWD has been detected in 30 states, but not South Carolina. SCDNR is working to keep South Carolina CWD free. WebCWD is one of a family of diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. These diseases are the result of a naturally occurring protein, called a prion, that becomes misfolded and thus resists being broken down by the body the way normal proteins are.

WebCWD has been found in wild and captive elk, moose, and caribou as well as white-tailed, mule, red, and sika deer. We don’t know if other cervid species are susceptible, and there is no scientific evidence that CWD can be transmitted to species outside the deer family, such as cattle, horses, sheep, goats, or swine.
