WebHess' law allows the enthalpy change (ΔH) for a reaction to be calculated even when it cannot be measured directly. This is accomplished by performing basic algebraic operations based on the chemical equation of reactions using previously determined values for the enthalpies of formation. WebHere, the special form of Hess’s law and the heat of formation values for the reactants and products is used: Δ Hf ° (HNO 3) = −206.64 kJ/mol; Δ Hf ° (NO) = +90.2 kJ/mol; Δ Hf ° (NO 2) = +33 kJ/mol; Δ Hf ° (H 2 O) = −285.8 kJ/mol.
