I bought a balanced 383 rotating assembly and am in the process of installing it. I'm checking the rod clearance piston by pistons with the cam tunnel. You don't want your screen an inch from the bottom of the pan, more like 3/8". No need giving up 5/8" of oil that you might need sometime. You can run 5 quarts in a 7 quart pan and still get plenty of oil to the engine provided the pan is properly baffled.
